Pomace Olive Oil A Versatile Ingredient for Your Kitchen

Pomace Oil is a type of oil that is refined from pomace of olive oil. Due to it’s refinement, Pomace Oil is considered to be pure with close to zero acidity. This type of oil is best for frying purposes for it has a high smoke point of 240° Celsius. As a refined oil, pomace oil does not have a distinct taste but it is great for deep frying for it is a lighter choice compared to other frying oils.

Process of Manufacturing of Pomace Olive Oil

Crushing: Olives are first crushed to create a paste, releasing the oil trapped within the fruit.

Pressing: The olive paste is then pressed to extract the initial oil. This pressing process typically yields extra virgin or virgin olive oil.

Extraction: After the initial pressing, the leftover olive pomace, consisting of skins, pulp, and pits, still contains a significant amount of oil. To extract this remaining oil, solvents such as hexane are often used. The pomace is mixed with the solvent, which binds to the oil molecules, allowing them to be separated from the solid material.

Evaporation: The solvent-oil mixture is then heated to evaporate the solvent, leaving behind the extracted olive oil.

Refinement: The extracted oil may undergo further refining processes to remove any remaining impurities and improve its color and flavor.

Blending: Pomace olive oil is sometimes blended with virgin olive oil to enhance its flavor and aroma.

Is pomace olive oil good for Cooking

Pomace olive oil is good for frying and cooking at high temperatures because it doesn’t burn easily. But it has a mild taste and fewer nutrients than virgin olive oil, so it might not be the best choice if you want the olive oil flavor to stand out in your dish. It’s useful for some cooking tasks, but think about what you’re making before you use it.

Is pomace olive good for health

  • Pomace olive oil contains healthy monounsaturated fats.
  • Consumption in moderation can be beneficial for heart health.
  • However, it undergoes a refining process that removes some natural antioxidants and nutrients found in virgin olive oil.
  • This may slightly diminish its overall health benefits compared to virgin olive oil.
  • While still suitable for cooking, virgin or extra virgin olive oils are generally considered to have higher nutritional value and potential health benefits due to their less processed nature.
